Our Story

The Breadstore is situated on the bustling Gloucester Road in Bristol, a road which leads north out of the city. It is a unique shopping street with many individual traders who trade only on the Gloucester Road.

It was set up in 1993 by Marcus and Davinia Wells. It has grown from a small family business when Marcus did the majority of the baking and Davinia sold the wares, to a business which keeps six skilled bakers producing day and night, and a host of shop sales people serving customers. The vast majority of our trade is retail but we do supply many local pubs and restaurants, and a handful of shops.

Unlike many other bakeries, we try to start baking as late as possible to maximise the freshness of our products. This means there is always hot stuff coming out of the ovens often until 2:00pm.

We endeavour to supply our local community with good, healthy and wholesome bakery products at a fair price. We source ingredients as locally as possible with our flour coming from Shipton Mill in Tetbury, Gloucestershire, and ADM in Avonmouth, Bristol. We hate waste so all products not sold at the end of the day are offered at half price the next day, or taken to the local night shelter for the homeless.

A few testimonials.
"As the queues which form each and every day outside Gloucester Road's Breadstore will attest, the shop is a paradise for those who love the smell of freshly baked bread. Packed with bread of all different shapes and sizes, from traditional white and wholemeal loaves to baguettes and ciabatta, people flock to the Breadstore for speciality breads, including mushroom and rosemary, sundried tomato and green or black olive, not forgetting their excellent filled rolls and cakes." Venue mag.

"Customers queue early outside Marcus Wells' Bristol bakery for mouth- watering sun dried tomato bread, spanish feast bread and pain rustique. Traditional fare- the good old crusty white, and wholemeal or scumptious jam doughnut, for example- are still on offer too. But times have changed. The wonderful array of goodies available at the Breadstore shows just how much the bakery trade-and customers' tastes have changed in recent years. This man has certainly used his loaf to diversify." Bristol Evening Post.

"Winner of the "best bread in bristol" award in 2005. Unbelievable range of bread baked on the premises, with the vast majority of it being vegan. The sundried tomato bread is a legend, its combination of flavours and textures making it probably the Real Madrid of Bristol bread. A kind of, I dunno, crossover between Di Stefano and Beckham, or something. Meanwhile, the organic range continues to flourish." Vegan guide to Bristol.
